Biography

Eleanor Shiori Hughes is currently a Non-Resident Fellow at econVue. Her research interests span a wide range of subjects including U.S. engagement in the Indo-Pacific; Japanese and Australian foreign policy; the Pacific Islands; and the nexus of business, technology and geopolitics in Asia, especially semiconductors. 

Eleanor was previously a Defense Analyst at The Asia Group (TAG), where she supported the firm's Defense and Aerospace practice by researching industry and complex geopolitical dynamics unfolding across Indo-Pacific markets. Before she joined TAG, she interned at the Asia Society Policy Institute, where she monitored supply chain trendlines of various Indo-Pacific economies, U.S. tariffs on China, and regional economic integration in Asia. Prior to joining Asia Society, Eleanor was a Research Assistant at Georgetown's Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, where she conducted research on transnational issues including food security and kleptocracy. She also worked for the Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where she covered issues on the U.S.-Japan alliance, Japanese foreign policy, economic statecraft, and climate change. 

Eleanor was previously a Kim Koo Fellow at The Korea Society in New York City and a delegate of the QUADMIN Emerging Leaders Dialogue in Melbourne, Australia in Fall 2022. Currently, she is a member of the Pacific Forum’s Young Leaders Program, the Council on Foreign Relations’ Young Professionals Program, the Australian American Leadership Dialogue, and the Australian Institute for International Affairs and The Japan Foundation's Indo-Pacific Cooperation Network. 

Eleanor frequently authors reports and opinion pieces on contemporary geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific. Her works have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Japan Times, The Lowy Institute’s Interpreter, among other outlets. Biography

Karim Pakravan capped a 25-year career in international banking in 2007, subsequently returning to a full-time academic career with an 8-year stint as a member of the Finance Department at DePaul University. Pakravan retired from academia in mid-2016, but is continuing as an Adjunct Professor at both DePaul University and Loyola University Chicago, lecturing on Finance and Economics topics.

During his international banking career, which started at First Chicago and ended three mergers later at JPMorgan Chase, Pakravan specialized in international financial research—22 years in Country Risk Management, of which ten as Department Head; 3 years as Vice President/Senior Economist in Foreign Exchange/Emerging Markets advisory. 

Since rejoining academia, Pakravan had lectured extensively on corporate finance, money and banking, financial management, international finance, private equity, macroeconomics and quantitative methods in finance. He has also been teaching a case-based private equity class since 2011. In addition at DePaul, Pakravan has had international teaching engagements:  Visiting Professor at Hong Kong University and short courses at Wirtschaft Universitaet (Vienna), Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance, and EAN Business School (Bogota).  Pakravan’s research has focused on global financial markets and macro-financial markets and financial regulation. In the past few years, he has published several articles on the 2008 financial crisis and global financial architecture, as well as on the topic of bank regulation, Basel capital rules and banking stress testing.

Pakravan has leveraged his academic background and business experience in consulting, and is currently Economic Advisor and member of the Investment Committee of Advocacy Investing, a small Chicago-based wealth management advisor.

Pakravan holds B.S in Economics from the University of Geneva, an M.Sc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics and a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Katz has taught about Japan’s economy as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the New York University Stern School of Business, and as a Visiting Lecturer in Economics at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook.

Mr. Katz is the author of two books on Japan's economic travails and has just finished a third book on reviving entrepreeurship in Japan.

His first book was Japan: The System That Soured--The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Economic Miracle (M.E. Sharpe 1998). A Japanese edition was published in 1999 under the title Kusariyuku Nihon To Iu System (Toyo Keizai Shimposa). The book received favorable reviews from such publications as the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Asahi Shimbun, Toyo Keizai, The Japan Quarterly, The Journal of Japanese Studies and the Far Eastern Economic Review, among others. Toyo Keizai named it "one of the 20 books needed to understand the 21st century."

In 2002, his second book was published, entitled Japanese Phoenix: The Long Road to Economic Revival (M.E. Sharpe) in English and Fushicho no Nihon Keizai (Toyo Keizai) in Japanese. It also received favorable reviews. Both books have been widely used in university courses.

He has testified several times about Japan and Asia to Congressional committees. He has frequently been invited to meet with senior officials in both the US and Japanese governments to provide analysis. In the year 2000, he served on the Council of Foreign Relations' Task Force on the Japanese economy. He regularly lectures at universities and conferences.

Mr. Katz’s essays have been published by Foreign Affairs, The Washington Quarterly, The International Economy Magazine, Current History, Challenge and The American Prospect. Op‑eds have appeared in such papers as the New York Times, London Financial Times, Asian Wall Street Journal, Asahi Evening News, Christian Science Monitor and the Investors Business Daily. He is the author of the article on the Japanese economy in the Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia. Mr. Katz's comments on Japan are frequently quoted in major publications, including the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, London Economist, London Financial Times, Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine International, Newsweek International, and the San Jose Mercury, and he has been interviewed on CNN, The PBS Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Marketplace, Bloomberg TV, and BBC's The World.

Having received his B.A. degree in History from Columbia University in 1973, Mr. Katz went on to obtain his M.A. in Economics at New York University (NYU) in 1996.

Biography

Lyric Hughes Hale’s interest in economics began in 1998, when she founded China Online, a pathbreaking publication which provided China business news in English on the web. China Takes Off, published in Foreign Affairs in 2003 and written jointly with her husband, economist David Hale, is one of the most oft cited and seminal articles on China’s economic ascendency.  They also co-authored “What’s Next: Unconventional Wisdom on the Future of the World Economy” published in 2011 by Yale University Press.

She first went to China in 1979 as a member of a delegation from the State of Illinois, when she asked to visit the local Chinese newspaper. In time, as China began to accept advertising from foreign firms, this led to Ms Hale being named US advertising representative for more than three hundred Chinese media companies, including the People’s Daily and China Central Television. Ms Hale bought the rights and produced the first telecast of the Super Bowl in China in 1986, the largest single audience for the game in its history.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ms. Hale served as CEO of TLI/Hughes International. The company developed and helped to execute initial China market entry strategies for technology-focused companies such as Microsoft, Motorola, AT&T, and Apple Computer. During that time, she co-founded Women in International Trade, now a worldwide organization, to help entry-level women pursue careers in global business. She was named as one of the “25 Women of Small Business” by FORTUNE Magazine.

Ms Hale has been a contributor to a range of publications, including the Financial Times, Current History, Institutional Investor, and the International Economy. She has addressed audiences at the World Economic Forum, the Brookings Institution, the Aspen Ideas Festival.

Ms Hale attended Northwestern University and graduated from the University of Chicago, majoring in Persian studies. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Association for Asian Studies, American Economic Association, and Bretton Woods Committee. She serves on the board of  Australian-American Leadership Dialogue, . She is mother to a blended family of five children, grandmother of two, and lives in a Japanese-style house in Chicago.
